Growing Blue Together in Amsterdam

A community project with indigo & natural dyeing – by Roua Alhalabi

Did you know the indigo plant used to grow right here in Amsterdam? We’re bringing this magical blue back to the city — together with neighbors, friends, and volunteers. Everyone is welcome to join!

About the Project

This project lives in a creative space I founded with love: Rouaatelier.
My passion for natural dyes began in my grandmother’s garden. She dyed her clothes with plants she grew herself — her hands always colorful, her heart always warm. That memory stays with me every day.

Now, through this project, I want to pass on that love.

At my atelier, we come together to learn, create, and reconnect — with nature, with craft, and with each other. Together, we give old clothes a new life and create something beautiful — with our hands, our attention, and the power of plants.

What We Do Together

Grow, care for, and harvest the indigo plant

Hold seasonal gatherings in the dye garden

Make pigment and prepare dye baths

Host workshops for adults & kids

Garden Gatherings – Every 3 Weeks

We meet at the garden to chat, drink tea, share stories, and work together. Depending on the season, we’ll be watering, weeding, harvesting, or preparing new dye plants.

Free Natural Dye Workshops

Workshops are open to children and adults!
Use natural techniques like Shibori, eco-printing, and block printing. Bring your own white item made of natural fabric (washed in advance).
You’ll also receive a cotton tote bag to dye and take home.
